Meeting the People on Your Trail

Did you bike your 150 during Canada’s 150?  Seventy-five year old Jim Bauman sure did – he averages at least 5000 km per year on his wheels.  No that is not a typo – Five. Thousand.  Part of that was indeed the entire G2G Rail Trail and he generously shared his experiences with us.

As a member of the Easy Riders cycling group and a cycling enthusiast extraordinaire, Jim is out on the trails or the roads almost every snowless day.  He has always enjoyed biking, and has often done longer trips with his wife and friends in West Virginia, around Lake Ontario’s 120km Waterfront Trail as well as touring around Lake Erie and the P’tit Trail du Nord in Quebec just to name a few.

Jim discovered the Kissing Bridge Trailway (KBT) nearly 25 years ago when he and his family moved spitting distance from it and he’s been a regular on the trail ever since.  He’ll often ride from Elmira to Guelph or Millbank, meeting at the turnaround for a meal date with his wife before heading back but until a G2G newsletter about #Canadarides150 and the IPM by the trail in Walton this past September hadn’t realized riding the entire G2G was a possibility.

Although he has done over 100km in one day on paved roads this past summer he decided to break it down in chunks.
The first leg was McNaught Line to Blyth and contained one detour that has since happily become unnecessary with the opening of the Blyth Brook Bridge in the fall.

Going from Blyth to Goderich he was able to experience the unique vista from the Mennesetung Bridge overlooking the Maitland River and out to the shore of Lake Huron.
Elmira to Millbank is old hat to Jim, but the next sections from Millbank to Milverton and the on to Walton were more of a challenge and also provided the most memorable moments of his G2G ride.  Since he completed his ride there have been more bridges installed at Monkton and Millbank making the route more easily passable by bike but at the time he roughed it over a few fences and detoured again in Walton.  It was also on the Perth Harvest Pathway that he shared the trail with a group of Mennonite children on scooters with fat tires as well as a herd of sheep!

After completing all sections of the G2G Jim shared his journey with us and made suggestions for improvements along the trail to ease the passage for future riders, including himself – he plans on doing the whole trail again in a two day trip as soon as it is fully connected.
Thanks Jim – Happy Trails!!

Milverton Kiosk Project Completed

In early December with the help of local Steward Group – The Milverton Lions Club, the installation of another kiosk was completed in Milverton at the trail-head located just off CPR Drive. This kiosk will enhance accessibility to the trail and help to promote, educate and increase public use of the Perth Harvest Pathway section. Once all phases are complete with signage and maps, trail users who live in or visit this community will be greeted with information about the trail, way-finding information for the area, and a resting point. This project was made possible with a grant from our partner the Stratford Perth Community Foundation through the International Plowing Match 2005 Fund.

New partnership sharing healthy goals

G2G is very excited to formalize a partnership with Gateway Centre of Excellence in Rural Health.  Director of Operations Chris Lee met with Gateway director Jay McFarlan last month to sign a Memorandum of Understanding and provide another avenue to support and encourage healthy living in rural Ontario.

Gateway is a non profit research group that directs research and promotion with a goal to improve “the quality of life and overall health” right in G2G’s neighbourhood and we are pleased to find ways to work with them throughout the 13 communities we connect.

Bridges

Just a quick “humble brag” to remind you of the three new bridges that were installed along the G2G last year in Walton, Monkton and Millbank.  Plans are underway for even more bridges over the next 2-3 years as we keep moving forward to our ultimate goal:  147 km of fully accessible, safe and healthy rail trail.  In case you wanted to see it again, here’s a link to our video of the Blyth Brook Bridge in Walton. Enjoy!

IMPORTANT SOCAN Reporting

Hi Programmers!
First, I'm sorry if you get two of these emails….We are working with the new email system and I'm still figuring it out. I think I did it right but haven't received it yet.
Anyways, Tomorrow starts SOCAN reporting! (sorry for the late notice)
A few things to keep in mind. We need to play 33% Canadian and only 40% hits.
If your show is Tomorrow (Wednesday), Thursday, Friday or Saturday. Please send me your set list. I need the following information:
Date | Song Title | Performer | Composer |
FYI – we will be loading up Airtime also, so if you are in the studio just be aware that something might start playing during your time slot. You will need to turn that dial down.
Thanks! Please send your set lists to me!

PUB CAROLS WITH THE ORANGE PEEL CAROLLERS SUNDAY DECEMBER 17TH, 2017, Cambridge ON

The Mill Race Folk Society

 presents

pub carols with the orange peel carollers Sunday December 17th, 2017 from 2-5pm at

the KIWI, 47 dickson st, cambridge (galt)

Following a time-honoured tradition from the north of England, a group of local friends under the banner of the Orange Peel Carollers will be gathering on Sunday, Dec. 17 at the KIWI to sing what are known as Village or Pub Carols.

These carols are not the standard Christmas stock we hear piped into every mall; they are often more boisterous and secular in nature than the familiar fare.

They have been preserved in the pub environment in several Yorkshire villages for at least the past 200 years. In some cases, these carols were frowned upon by the church of the time, and dropped from the order of service. They were sometimes retained by only one congregation, village, or family and were held with great pride and even jealousy. Pub carols are regaining popularity in England.

The Pub carolling tradition in Canada was started in Ottawa around 1990 and has proven quite popular there.

The song book the group will use for several of the carols is a publication from the Ottawa Folklore Centre entitled The Canadian Pub Caroller. It combines traditional English carols with some long-forgotten early Canadian hymns and carols.

The Orange Peel Carollers like to think that they are doing their part to maintain the tradition and help it take root our local area.

Most of the carols will be unfamiliar to modern ears, but with their folky sound and rousing choruses, some are very easy to learn. Other songs will be more familiar, but with a twist.

If you would like to hear more, or better yet come out and sing along with the group, they invite you to join them at the KIWI, 47 Dickson St, Cambridge (Galt) from 2 P.m. to 5 P.M.  A

dmission if Free, but donations for the carollers are welcome.

December 7 Radiothon brings hope to local children, youth and families

cid:<a href=image003.jpg@01D35A03.3E257400” width=”229″ height=”154″>

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MEDIA RELEASE

2017 marks the 25th anniversary of the CHYM Tree of Hope Radiothon, bringing hope to local children, youth and families

Thursday, December 7, 2017

5 a.m. to 6 p.m.

CF Fairview Park

Kitchener – December 4, 2017 – For 25 years, the CHYM Tree of Hope Radiothon has given people the chance to hear about families, children and youth in our community who have faced big challenges – and how Family and Children’s Services of the Waterloo Region, and generous community members who have contributed to its Foundation, have helped them heal, learn and grow.

On December 7, local families will share moving stories on air as part of the Radiothon.

·       You’ll hear from Kalsoom, whose son developed better social skills and a more positive outlook thanks to a special theatre program he was enrolled in.

·       You’ll learn about how the Sexual Abuse Treatment Program helped one teen heal after she endured years of abuse.

·       An adoptive father will describe how he and his wife made the decision to adopt an older child – and the joy she has brought into their lives.

The Family & Children’s Services Foundation is encouraging community members to consider making a donation so that these important programs will continue to be available all year long to those who need the extra support. It all comes together for one amazing day of caring that makes a big difference in the lives of families, children and youth.

Special guests will join us throughout the day, with opportunities for photos in our photo booth, including:

6 a.m. to 9 a.m. – CHYM Drive for Hope – Live with Brady, Adele & Tara

9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. – Meet princess characters from Fairytale Parties

12 p.m. to 1 p.m. – KW Titans answer the phones

1 p.m. to 3 p.m. – Special guests Jayna Hefford, five-time women’s hockey Olympic medalist, Waterloo Mayor Dave Jaworsky, Kitchener City Councillor Dave Schnider

3 to 6 p.m. – CHYM Drive for Hope – Live with Mark Paine

Listen live to CHYM 96.7 or come to CF Fairview Park mall to see it all happening live with CHYM 96.7’s Brady, Adele and Tara (6-9 a.m.) and Mark Paine (3-6 p.m.). There is no minimum donation and any amount helps. One day can make a difference to families in our community.

With your help and support, there’s hope. To donate to the CHYM Tree of Hope, please call 519-748-TREE (8733), drop by the mall to make a donation in person, or donate online at www.chymtreeofhope.com

Thank you to the many caring community members who have generously donated over the last 25 years. We are so grateful for your continued support of children and families in Waterloo Region. Special thanks to CHYM for continuing to open its heart and airwaves to benefit local families and children.

Ribbon Cutting and Presentation
Join us on the Trail, then back at Cowbell Brewery

If you have seen our video – you MUST be curious! The most recent bridge installation, located between Limekiln Line and Sandhill Line (just outside Blyth, ON) was a challenging and rewarding project.

Now you’re invited to be a part of it! Bring out any trail enthusiast or stakeholder you can convince to take that last walk out on the trail before the snow flies!

Please accept this invitation to join us to commemorate Guelph to Goderich Rail Trail’s (G2G) newly installed Blyth Brook Bridge at our Celebration of the Trail: The Blyth Brook Bridge Ribbon Cutting Event!

The G2G Rail Trail Experience has been built on the former CP rail line decommissioned in 1988 and acquired by the Province in 1990.  Local trail enthusiasts, naturalists, the County of Huron County, Perth County, Wellington County, the Region of Waterloo and MTCS’ Regional Tourism Unit RTO4 the have all invested more than $2 million dollars towards the goal of creating Canada’s longest fully accessible off-road trail system of 127 km’s from Guelph to Goderich.

Event Details
Monday, November 20, 2017 @ 11:00am

11:15am – Ribbon Cutting on the trail (Coordinates 43.75099, -81.50425)
Parking along Limekiln Line, Auburn, ON is encouraged, with the bridge being a 10-minute walk from the trail entrance.
(The weather is looking grey, so please dress appropriately for the walk out to the bridge)

12:00pm – Reception at Cowbell Brewing Company (40035 Blyth Rd, Blyth, ON N0M 1H0)
Brewery Tours and Tastings are available downstairs following the presentation.

We look forward to celebrating with you our dream of building bridges, connecting communities.

Major accomplishments along the G2G Rail Trail over the past 3 years include clearing over 60 km of the trail and the constructions of 5 bridges. The Blyth Brook Bridge, installed just weeks ago, is the newest contribution. This event aims to celebrate and recognize the work of the communities throughout the region who continue to work hard to build support and momentum for the last big push: replacement of the three major river valley bridges.

Background and Additional Details

The village of Blyth, where the reception will be held, is an industrious and active community. In May, the totally renovated Blyth Memorial Hall was unveiled. Home to the Iconic Blyth Festival, the hall opened its doors to festival patrons and community entertainment in June 2017. Additionally, The Cowbell Brewing Company opened amid much fanfare in August 2017. One of a kind, this destination brewing company chose to locate and support the local Blyth economy. It is the world’s first closed loop brewery and the first carbon neutral brewery in North America.

The Canadian Centre for Rural Creativity is refining its plan to be a significant player in Blyth as a hub for cultural and rural community development, challenging the definitions of rural and how it impacts creativity. The Canadian Centre for Rural Creativity offers programs and experiences that build skills and creative partnerships, as well as leveraging opportunities for social entrepreneurship. The reception in Blyth offers the potential to celebrate the economic transformation going on in Blyth where all players, including the G2G trail, are playing an important role.

Meeting the People on Your Trail

You might have seen them on the trail this morning, breezing through with a cheery smile and a friendly wave.  If you’re a regular on the Kissing Bridge Trailway section of the G2G it’s likely you’ve even seen them more than once.

As long as the weather is halfway decent and the snow stays away, Marg and Jim Blackler are on their bikes at least 5 days of the week and many of those days you’ll find them riding the KBT.  At 67 and 69 respectively, their endurance rivals that of cyclists a quarter their age – last year they logged over 5000 km on various trails throughout Ontario.

Being too busy through their working and child-rearing years, they only came into their new ‘lifestyle’ after Jim’s retirement 12 years ago.  Marg decided they needed a hobby that kept them active and settled on biking.  “Being in nature opens up your brain, it’s just a great way to start your day,” she enthuses, “Even with whatever the weather brings you can say, ‘That was a good ride!’”

The Guelph couple do sections on different trails but find the G2G Rail Trail convenient, with easy access to parking and locations where they can take breaks.  Riding anywhere from a 20 to 40 km loop, the Blacklers take a break halfway for a bite to eat and a rest before heading back.  They really appreciate having countryside trails on their rides for the landscape and for the safety.  On one of their trips earlier this year Marg was knocked over by a car in Elmira and spend 8 weeks recovering before hopping back on the proverbial horse.  Since then they have been taking it ‘easy’, only doing 20-25km per day and holding off on the longer rides for a little while longer until Marg is fully confident she has recovered her previous stamina.

Marg and Jim show no signs of slowing down anytime soon.  Jim is especially looking forward to the day they can ride the trail from downtown Guelph and out of the city without having to go on a road at all.  He’d like to do a mini holiday along the G2G spending a few days on the trail exploring and staying en route.  They’ve adjusted their bikes for long distance comfort – crank forward hybrids, slightly recumbent with noseless seats – and are not at all daunted by such a challenge.

The Blacklers praise the trail for encouraging people of all ages – seniors, young families, all skill levels – to “get out and get active, to enjoy Canada and be healthy.” They’re even training the younger generations: their 4 year old granddaughter rode with them for 9km this summer.  With frequent check ins and breaks she proudly showed them what an inspiration they are.

Waterloo Public Library’s After Hours @ The Library fundraiser

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – November 7, 2017

Meet your favourite Canadian authors at Waterloo Public Library’s annual fundraiser

On Friday, November 17th, Waterloo Public Library will be holding its 4th annual fundraiser,
After Hours @ The Library. In celebration of Canada 150, this year’s event will give attendees the chance to get “up close and personal” with a few of our favourite Canadian authors.

Waterloo Public Library is thrilled to welcome writers Ian Hamilton, Donna-Marie Pye, Andrew Pyper and Carrie Snyder to our Main Library for an extraordinary evening of conversation, food and drink. Attendees can chat with authors, mingle
over cocktails (our Information Services desk makes a great bar!) and indulge in delicious canapés and desserts.

Each year, After Hours @ The Library receives incredible support from local businesses, restaurants and caterers in the form of food sponsorship and prize donations.

“We are extremely thankful for the dedicated support of our community partners who, year after year, donate generously to our fundraiser” says Laurie Clarke, Waterloo Public Library’s CEO. “Without them, this event wouldn’t be possible.
We sincerely appreciate their commitment to supporting the library and helping us in not only raising funds but creating a unique event that brings the community together.”

Since its inception in 2014, this dynamic fundraiser has been incredibly successful and this year’s event promises to be the biggest one yet. With draw prizes valued at over $5,000, a Silent Auction that features two tickets to anywhere
in the world WestJet flies, and appetizers from Bhima’s Warung, e.v.o Kitchen, Famoso, Just Love Pie, Little Mushroom Catering and Winnie’s Gluten-Free Kitchen, this event is a perfect opportunity to enjoy an exciting evening in Uptown Waterloo and find out
what happens at the library “after hours”.

Tickets for After Hours @ The Library are $50 each and include canapés and one drink ticket. To see full details and purchase tickets, please visit afterhours.wpl.ca.

BULLYING ENDS HERE SHORTLISTED AS A ‘TOP TEN’ CHARITY FOR ONCE IN A LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY
Public Encouraged to vote for Bullying Ends Here through Industrial Alliance Website

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 8, 2017

Vancouver, B.C. – Bullying Ends Here and its founder, Tad Milmine, are asking the public for their votes, as the organization vies to win the #1 spot and a $125,000 prize, courtesy of Industrial Alliance, among a group of “Top 10” not-for-profit organizations from across Canada.

For the month of November, the public is being kindly asked to vote for the charity they believe is the most deserving of $125,000.

Bullying Ends Here President and Founder Tad Milmine says: “Thanks so much to Industrial Alliance for this phenomenal opportunity. It is an honour to stand alongside these 9 organizations, each of whom is doing critically important work in communities across the country.”

He adds: “Winning would allow Bullying Ends Here to spend more time in communities, speaking to youth. It would help us reach those that need it most and it would allow us to continue with not only changing lives, but saving them, so we would appreciate your vote.”

Since starting the organization four years ago, Tad has shared his anti-bullying message with over 250,000 youth around the world and has combatted bullying in all forms across the country.

Tad adds: “You can vote once per email address and every vote truly counts. Being able to continue to reach youth and discuss the topics of bullying is invaluable. With your vote, you can help inspire and save these children.”

Voting ends on November 30th and the winner will be announced on December 11th. The public can vote both on the Bullying Ends Here website, or at the Industrial Alliance website.

To encourage voting, Tad is also offering an exciting prize pack to one lucky voter.

About Bullying Ends Here

Calgary Police Constable Tad Milmine spent his teenage years a victim of bullying. In 2011, after reading about the suicide of 15-year-old Jamie Hubley, an openly gay Ontario youth bullied relentlessly for his sexuality, Tad was inspired to take his personal struggle public. He is the founder of Bullying Ends Here and travels across the world speaking with young people about the real effects of bullying. He has spoken all across North America and Europe and has reached close to 250,000 youth in person. Tad has received universal acclaim for the work that he does, including the inaugural Kaleidoscope of Hope Award. For more information about the foundation, visit www.bullyingendshere.ca and follow Tad on Twitter @tadmilmine.

I encourage everyone to sign my petition since the Wynne Government is not holding any community consultation meetings here in Kitchener-Waterloo for the Anti-Racism meeting that is taking place in other cities such as Toronto, London, Windsor, and Sudbury. We need to send a clear message that all Ontarians matter and therefore, all MPPs should host community consultations that are open to the public. Please sign my petition now!
