  • Welcome To The Civic Hub : Today at 1:00pm we welcome Cathie Stewart of ALIVE/Poverty Professors to the Civic Hub. Listen to CKMS-FM at 102.7 on the radio, https://radiowaterloo.ca/listen on the Internet, or YouTube Live at https://youtu.be/XE7gyFWp0Rc
  • Bob Jonkman : guest_4810: Is a separate "floating" player something people want? We'll work on it!
  • guest_4810 : Some radio station websites have a "play" button and it keeps playing at the top of every page as I navigate thru website. For example: radio1.cz
  • Bob Jonkman : Good night, Mr. Smart!
  • Requiem : well thanks for all you do. Goodnight Bob.
  • Requiem : That would be optimal. You guys do a great job with a lot of hurdles and roadblocks and gremlins!! Its very complex.
  • Bob Jonkman : Agreed, there. There are several website widgets that might accomplish that, but all of them are Javascript dependent, and a bit onerous to install and maintain. Definitely something to consider when we've moved the website in-house!
  • Requiem : Well at least when someone clicks the green Listen Live button on the homepage then the show should immediately start up.....with out having to open another tab when the listenlive page opens up.
  • Bob Jonkman : No, that's considered very bad Web site design. Anything that's not static visual info should only be activated with an explicit request (video, graphic animation, audio streams)
  • Requiem : Really whatever is playing on CKMS should immediately start playing when someone comes to the Homepage.
  • Bob Jonkman : Ah, right. (curses, asynchronous message order!)
  • Bob Jonkman : The link to the online stream https://radiowaterloo.ca/stream redirects from the website to the actual server. So when you see the direct server URL you can connect to that. But sometimes that URL changes, but the website URL https://radiowaterloo.ca/stream will stay the same. We did this just in December when the streaming service provider shut down, and we moved to our own server.
  • Requiem : unless someone has the live stream link written down they can't get in to a show
  • Requiem : but can't be accessed unless from the homepage....
  • Requiem : exactly. The livestream would still work...
  • Bob Jonkman : Fortunately, the online streams weren't affected, they run on a different server. But connecting to the streams is generally done through a link on the website, so that made the online stream unavailable to people trying to connect during the downtime.
  • Requiem : Well its vital that the Board decide to make sure there are no site crashes and do what ever it takes to stop those going forward. Because though we love our airwave listeners, online listeners are crucial too!
  • Bob Jonkman : The plan (aka "Bob's plan", not necessarily the approved CKMS plan) is to bring the webserver in-house. We should have the bandwidth in the studio to run our own webserver, which then opens the possibilities of running many other services that we can't on a shared webhost. But there's a dependency to freeing up one of the existing servers. Probably the current LibreTime server, which should be replaced during the upgrade to LibreTime and its move to the transmitter site.
  • Requiem : Always much appreciated! Kudos to the CKMS TECH TEAM!
  • Bob Jonkman : Got your e-mail. I'll document the problem and the remediation there.
  • Requiem : Hope we can correct such outages in the future.....
  • Bob Jonkman : Yes, there was an alert sent out about the site being down around 10:10pm, but I didn't see it until I got back to my computer, just as you were signing off. There were dozens of pending web server tasks, and when I killed them all the website came back up.
  • Requiem : discuss via email
  • Requiem : it was just for the one hour of my show
  • Requiem : yes about that
  • Bob Jonkman : About the website outage? I think we've outgrown our webhost package, more and more frequently we're running into quota limits
  • Requiem : sent.....
  • Requiem : I'm just sending a note to tech.COM.
  • Bob Jonkman : Yup! Sadly, I got here just as you were signing off.
  • Requiem : Still there Bob?
  • Bob Jonkman : Sorry, missed the whole thing. Will have to catch up on the #Replay, Friday at 6pm

You can also see track info on our secondary stream at https://radiowaterloo.ca/stream2
  • guest_7641 : Where do we see song and artists names
  • Bob Jonkman : G'Night, Mr. Smart!
  • Requiem : Hope we can increase our on air power soon....we gotta look into it. goodnight.
  • Bob Jonkman : It's amazing how fast the hour passes. I had plans to work on stuff while listening to R4R, but we spend all our time chatting!
  • Requiem : gotta go.....thanks again for the listen Bob!
  • Requiem : yes.....he always captures that too precious era...on 81 82 83 84. Hopefully the youth can now hear the musical essence of that time...
  • Bob Jonkman : Here's the set list for tonight: https://radiowaterloo.ca/81-82-83-84-s03e12/
  • Requiem : yeah......I liked "socialism is the best!"
  • Bob Jonkman : 81 82 83 84 is playing strange music tonight
  • Requiem : We should at least ask. If its less than 12 grand a year with a further broadcast range.........then its worth asking.
  • Bob Jonkman : And the Boehmer landlord probably wants rent for a tower patch on the roof, and probably commensurate with typical rates for tower colocation.
  • Bob Jonkman : There's another, smaller (but higher) tower on the apartment between the old CFTO building and Central Fresh Mart. Again, they're required to share, but now we'd have to deal not only with the tower owner, but also the building management.
  • Requiem : yeah.....but the Boehmer landlord would have to give permission.
  • Bob Jonkman : I don't think it's the cost of relocating to Boehmer, but the hoops of Industry Canada paperwork, some CRTC paperwork. There is the cost of hiring a broadcast engineer to do the required surveys, but that's a one-time expense
  • Requiem : someone said the Tower was on the apartment building next to the old CKCO.....
  • Bob Jonkman : We checked about 3-4 years ago. I think that was the price for co-locating on the downtown Kitchener CFTO tower. But that tower (and CFTO) is gone...
  • Requiem : yeah that cost of relocating to Boehmer would be prohibitive...
  • Bob Jonkman : I'd like to see about moving our tower (we own the tower) to the roof of the old Boehmer Box building. But that requires engineering surveys and consultations, would take years, and I'm not sure how long before the building is razed so a developer can build more condos...
  • Requiem : So we know for sure they want that sort of money to share?
  • Bob Jonkman : Co-locators are required by Industry Canada to share (IC prefers that, to reduce antenna clutter) but everybody wants a buck.
  • Requiem : So the potential co-locators to share with want that kind of money to share?
  • Bob Jonkman : The combination of a new transmitter and a new audio board would be great. We could transmit the regular audio as we do now, but enable the digital upper-band, so we could transmit track metadate (title, performer, album, show name, and even cover art or show logo!)
  • Requiem : Well no one is going to let us piggyback
  • Bob Jonkman : (and maybe more than 100,000 Watts)
  • Bob Jonkman : TV transmitters are up to 100,000 Watts. So good for some 300 km broadcast radius
  • Requiem : Well forget that!
  • Bob Jonkman : There's the possibility of co-locating on another tower. Typically that shares the transmitter infrastructure, so we'd provide the stream and the co-locator provides the transmitter amplifier, mast, and antenna. But co-locating costs twice as much as the tower site we're renting now.
  • Requiem : They had TV transmitters that reached us here from Buffalo!
  • Requiem : Shout out to BUFFALO!!!
  • Requiem : then a new Transmitter cost.....
  • Requiem : the Tower rent is extortionate
  • Requiem : I agree in sentiment.....but reality bites sigh
  • Bob Jonkman : Definitely keep the on-air broadcast. It's one of the few things that differentiates CKMS from hundreds of other online streaming services.
  • Requiem : Guess we have to make a decision. Stay old timey with on-air broadcast. Or just do it online.
  • Bob Jonkman : The toy catalog for radio nerds: https://www.nautel.com/products/fm-transmitters/vx-series/
  • Bob Jonkman : Could try to get the transmitter overhauled, maybe a couple of thousand dollars. But then we'd have an old, overhauled transmitter. I think we're better off saving our shekels and putting it towards a new transmitter. A good one can be had for about $6,500 from a Canadian company in Nova Scotia.
  • Requiem : 102.7 FM won't even stay on my car radio pre-sets!
  • Bob Jonkman : And if you're driving into Cambridge you can tell that Shantz Hill blocks the signal. Preston is in a broadcast shadow; the signal is much better towards Galt.
  • Requiem : No way to fix this and get our full potential?
  • Requiem : I see.......
  • Bob Jonkman : So if we're getting a clean signal only up to 10km radius then I figure we're only transmitting about 100 Watts. But for some reason it reaches much farther in the direction of Guelph. Part of that has to do with the orientation of the antenna element in relation to the mast. The mast acts as a reflector, increasing range a bit in the other direction.
  • Requiem : if it can't do at least Waterloo Region........not worthwhile for the expense.
  • Requiem : Seems kinda pointless for such a short range. But I know nothing of such technical considerations.
  • Bob Jonkman : Rule of thumb for FM range in km: the square root of the power in Watts. So if we're at 250 Watts that should provide a clean signal for a radius of 16 km or so. But I'm only about 13 km north of the tower, and reception on the car radio is staticky like it's at the far edge of the broadcast radius.
  • Requiem : Well we gotta fix that.....or just go online. Though that would be a shame....
  • Requiem : On a good day..maybe on the car radio in Cambridge....
  • Bob Jonkman : I suspect it's the transmitter. We're again using the old one, from before CKRZ donated their (old) transmitter to us. We're licensed for 250 Watts of power, but I suspect we're only getting about 100 Watts out of the transmitter.
  • Requiem : yeah the Range is kinda pathetic for what we have to pay to rent the Tower!
  • Bob Jonkman : About as far as you do, but north. Just out of range of good CKMS-FM reception. It's OK on the car radio, but I can't pick it up in the house.
  • Bob Jonkman : Requiem : Posted: 2024/01/10 @ 22:22:30 do you live far from CKMS?
  • Requiem : metaphor of decline.....
  • Requiem : yes........all of that was there......oppulence and decay.....
  • Bob Jonkman : I suppose that's the point of the tale being told on R4R.
  • Requiem : well......the Century Theater was an essence of both......from glamor to decadence...
  • Bob Jonkman : "That era" being the 1970s, or the 1920s?
  • Requiem : Its a strange song indeed.......and so apropo of that era.....
  • Bob Jonkman : OK, White Punks On Dope sounds a lot more angst-y than I remember it.
  • Requiem : I'll check out Shea theaters. Tonight' show is the old CENTURY THEATER in Buffalo.....so many great gigs there...
  • Requiem : I could. I only know SHEA Stadium in NYC.......last Beatles gig was there I believe.
  • Bob Jonkman : I used to work with Danny Shea, a grandson of one of the founders, who reminisced about sitting on the knees of famous actors and performers as they were negotiating contracts with his grandfather...
  • Requiem : I just record the show on a H4N hand held...then upload it to Libre time.
  • Bob Jonkman : Speaking of local theatres (as you were on R4R a few minutes ago), would you be able to do a show on the Shea Theatres that were in Buffalo, Chicago, and maybe other places?
  • Requiem : do you live far from CKMS?
  • Bob Jonkman : I know, I should set up my remote studio again, but being in the *Real* studio is much better. And I dislike winter driving too.
  • Requiem : Thanks. Though it will be Spring before I go back to the Studio. i get the spirit of the Studio too.
  • Bob Jonkman : I'll remind him.
  • Requiem : he was supposed to snail-mail it to me. I live in Cambridge and winter driving not my thing these days....
  • Bob Jonkman : Maybe drop in next Wednesday for the Board meeting and get one from Nat.
  • Requiem : I asked for that card a year and a half ago and still never got it...and the Dock code.
  • Bob Jonkman : You should have a card, and I can get you the code for the door at the loading dock.
  • Requiem : Thunderbirds....with Lady Penelope!!
  • Requiem : Frankly its hard to get into the studio at night. Codes and cards.
  • Bob Jonkman : The Eyewitness News theme wouldn't be out-of-place in a Thunderbirds episode
  • Requiem : well its kind of convenient to do the shows from home. No studio until better Spring weather anyway.
  • Bob Jonkman : Will you be going back into the studio?
  • Requiem : New shows coming soon! Thanks for listening.
  • Bob Jonkman : Definitely one of my favourite robots!
  • Requiem : Rocket ship 7 with Promo the robot!
  • Requiem : yes a repeat from a few years ago......but hopefully some fun nostalgia!
  • Bob Jonkman : Hi Mr. Smart! A repeat tonight... But Rocketship 7 takes me back to my youth!
  • Requiem : Shuffle of to chilly Buffalo tonight on REQUIEM FOR ROCK....to the Century Theater...
  • Requiem : Its a cool show......give a listen!

  • laufey apologist : Superstars by Yves Tumor ? (they hella gay)
  • Charlie : From the start
  • Charlie : I've loved you
  • Charlie : I know
  • guest_7742 : Charlie the L in LGBTQ+ stands for Laufey
  • Charlie : That whennnnn I talkkkk to you
  • Charlie : Is laufeyyy queer?? I mean I'll never complain to hear from the start
  • Charlie : Ok wait maybe cancel my song because upon further research, what I've heard is mere speculation. Apparently some things I've heard was just hearsay
  • Charlie : Regardless its a good song
  • Charlie : This was his time with the guess who, where he was the lead singer. I always heard that he was very closetted during the 60s and 70s and I'm pretty sure this song was an important first step to him coming out, but I could be wrong
  • Bandwidth Johnny Jamnet Believ : Will queue that up!
  • Charlie : Stand tall by Burton Cummings!
  • Bandwidth Johnny Jamnet Believ : Something that'll fit the queer theme tho

  • Bob Jonkman : OK, Good Night, Mr. Smart!
  • Requiem : Crashing now.......thanks for the listens!
  • Requiem : Another great Set-List on 81 82 83 84! LEE GREGORY captures the essence of the Era!!
  • Requiem : Outreach I guess.
  • Bob Jonkman : Good idea. But who bells the cat? ProgCom? MusiCom? Outreach?
  • Requiem : Maybe send out a notice to all Programmers to create a Seasonal Station ID Blurb?
  • Bob Jonkman : There's also the usual suspects: Jamendo.com, FreeMusicArchive.com (although that one now requires registration of some kind, so it's no longer free)
  • Requiem : the VILETONES! on 81 82 83 84! Have not heard them in Decades! An old Queen Street Scene band!
  • Bob Jonkman : It would be good to get some more programmers to make a seasonal StationID
  • Requiem : Thanks.......saved.
  • Bob Jonkman : I used Audionautix for the bed music in the Fundraiser promos I made. I might just make a Christmas StationID.
  • Bob Jonkman : Here's another musician who specifically licenses his music for re-use: https://audionautix.com
  • Requiem : ok I get that concept.
  • Bob Jonkman : But IANAL.
  • Bob Jonkman : Essentially, "If numbers can't be copyrighted, then generated music can't be copyrighted."
  • Requiem : lol You're talking Greek to me now!!
  • Bob Jonkman : And, from a data stream perspective, a stream of random numbers is indistinguishable from a stream of numbers that represent MIDI values.
  • Bob Jonkman : It's like someone who creates a random number algorithm. That's definitely copyrightable, but would random numbers that algorithm spits out be copyrightable?
  • Requiem : Oh there will be once Lawyers sniff a buck....
  • Bob Jonkman : I don't think there's any case law that determines whether some who creates an algorithm for music can claim rights to the music that's generated.
  • Requiem : They ought to all be happy their stuff is being played at all.
  • Requiem : ok good to know.
  • Bob Jonkman : If you need bed music for blogs it's better to use music specifically licensed for that purpose. You can get it from !earshot (Radio Waterloo programmers can get a login code).
  • Requiem : Always someone claiming ownership! Even though he creates nothing except Algorithms....
  • Bob Jonkman : That's what the fakemusicgenerator.com site claims. But the author of the cgMusic algorithm, Maciej Biedrzycki, claims that he owns copyright on any music generated by his algorithm.
  • Requiem : Missing Lord Lucan on 81 82 83 84!!!
  • Requiem : So that "fake music generator" gets around copyright issues for Blogs?
  • Requiem : Which CKMS is here always to promote them there Human Artists! Like the great INDIE SHOW .... FATHER TO SON!
  • Bob Jonkman : Yes, happily there is a thriving human-generated music scene in KW
  • Requiem : I don't wanna hear it if its not written and performed by a human being. Sorry if I'm a Luddite Dinosaur!
  • Bob Jonkman : Sadly, all the documentation for cgMusic seems to be gone from the Internets...
  • Requiem : I have a relative who typed in a few parameters and out came a song to celebrate a recent Birth in the family. His heart was in the right place but...........such insipid soul-less crud! Though not unmusical.....sigh.
  • Bob Jonkman : But Fake Music Generator is not AI, there's a well-defined algorithm, cgMusic, that pumps out MIDI tracks which the fakemusicgenerator.com turns into MP3s.
  • Bob Jonkman : Can't say I've heard any AI generated music. There's the Fake Music Generator, but that all sounds the same after a while (even with significantly different instrumentation). I've used the Fake Music Generator for theme music on podcasts: https://www.fakemusicgenerator.com/
  • Requiem : I love all human-made music! Long live actual Musicians, bad ones and great ones!
  • Requiem : I agree........thats why there is no "bad" music, only subjective tastes. The only "bad" music is A.I. crud.
  • Requiem : Well it was Blues based Metal ( Zep) which was still melodic and had progressions.....not just aural assault like screamo or death metal
  • Bob Jonkman : Music Genres are so subjective and arbitrary.
  • Bob Jonkman : Although Pink Floyd might be considered Prog Rock.
  • Bob Jonkman : No. Prog Rock was just self-indulgent guitar stroking.
  • Requiem : And Prog rock too.....not conducive to dancing in that era......
  • Bob Jonkman : I dunno. Was Led Zeppelin really Metal? Seems mild compared to some of today's Norwegian Death Metal.
  • Requiem : You couldn't dance much to KISS or SABBATH et al.
  • Requiem : That wasn't 70's metal though.....a bit later....
  • Bob Jonkman : I'm not sure that all Metal is undanceable. That's what "The Pogo" and "The Worm" were for...
  • Requiem : Ironically that era had both quite undance-able Metal AND very danceable Disco! Both at odds.....
  • Requiem : Yes but S2H had too many tempo changes.....making for awkward dancing on that last chance of the night song!
  • Bob Jonkman : Of course, I was the stage crew nerd running the lights and sound system. No clutching for me.
  • Requiem : They really knew how to make song titles in that 81 82 83 84 Era!!
  • Bob Jonkman : At least, that's how it was at my high school.
  • Bob Jonkman : It gave the young teenagers a chance to clutch a member of the opposite sex.
  • Bob Jonkman : Hm. S2H was the *big* dance number at high school dances.
  • Bob Jonkman : OK, settling in with the 81 82 83 84 playlist: https://radiowaterloo.ca/81-82-83-84-s03e07/
  • Requiem : Stairway was perhaps a bit too long......Juke Box programmers reluctant to stock it as it would last too long.... And its not very danceable.....
  • Bob Jonkman : I'm a bit surprised that "Stairway To Heaven" isn't in that Top10 list. But maybe even that's too recent for jukeboxes
  • Requiem : Thanks so much for the listen Guys!
  • Requiem : MY GIRL Temptations
  • Bob Jonkman : What rounds out the Top 10?
  • Requiem : Really..St. Jacobs...cool That Family Guy parody of Donny Most.....surreal!
  • Father To Son : I saw Donny er I mean "Don" most in a play in St. Jacobs a few years ago, it was so much fun, Ben knows who he is because they parodied him on Family Guy
  • Requiem : Lets all go to the Submarine Races!
  • Father To Son : Woh!
  • Requiem : heeyyyyy sit on it!!
  • Requiem : lol. Happy Days now dated and faded into Cult status......yet it reflected a time of innocence and repression....
  • Father To Son : Mr. C: Ritchie, how much did you have to drink? Ritchie: They were just tiny little glasses Mr C: How many did you have? Ritchie: 42
  • Requiem : Yep..as stated on the show...awesome Brecht Stuff!
  • Father To Son : Three Penny Opera
  • Requiem : Right...a classic. Bill Haley. You know the guy who played that Happy Days solo was not one of the Comets. He got paid 20 bucks for the studio recording and promptly fell down the stairs and broke his neck and died after recording that solo.....
  • Father To Son : That explains the opening shot for Happy Days
  • Requiem : Shaken not Stirred! Bar's open if you put a nickel in that old Juke Box!
  • Father To Son : I'll make it a double.
  • Requiem : The data can be found Bob. Those are the top 2 selections.
  • Requiem : Thanks F2S! Share a nightcap with R4R!
  • Father To Son : I'm crazy for staying up this late but it's worth it to hear Requiem For Rock!
  • Bob Jonkman : The Number One and Number Two most frequently played songs on jukeboxes? Who tracks these things?
  • Requiem : Hi Bob. I'll check those out later....thanks!
  • Bob Jonkman : Hi Mr. Smart! Have you seen these? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NmGaXEmfTIo and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1qRzKuskK0
  • Requiem : The History of the JUKE BOX...tonight on Requiem for Rock!
  • Requiem : For sure ...Join THROUGH THE STATIC Wednesdays at 9 pm!!
  • Through the Static : Thanks everyone! Tune in again next week for more of my "eclectic taste"! πŸ™‚

  • Bob Jonkman : 81 82 83 84 playlist: https://radiowaterloo.ca/81-82-83-84-s03e06/
  • Requiem : I'll try....sometimes techno works for me, other times gremlins win!
  • Bob Jonkman : Thanx for posting audio files on the website, BTW. Could you also add a bit of explanatory text?
  • Requiem : THE JAM on LEE GREGORY'S 81 82 83 84!! Always a cool visit to that era!
  • Requiem : Thanks Bob. The Laurel Canyon show is on libretime......under r4r
  • Bob Jonkman : Another good show!
  • Requiem : Many thanks for the listen and discussion Bob and Natasha. Made me less lazy!!
  • Requiem : yes thats a paradox! Lazy energy!
  • Bob Jonkman : So many of these "lazy" songs have so much energy!
  • Requiem : Show is called "LAUREL CANYON" and explains why and how the CIA invented the Hippies.....
  • Bob Jonkman : Ooh, I missed the CIA show. Online somewhere?
  • Requiem : Oh the CIA invented Hippies with the primary goal of discrediting the anti-war movement. In their lab atop Laurel Canyon.
  • Natasha : I recall your show on hippies and CIA. I’m not convinced though
  • Requiem : Yes you would look quite groovy in a kerchief Bob!
  • Natasha : I recall your show on that. I’m not convinced however. What do you hi k
  • Bob Jonkman : I could manage a kerchief!
  • Requiem : Yes Natasha. We need the Hippies again.......even if they were invented by the CIA!
  • Requiem : Kerchiefs for guys....mood rings....open shirts with medallions!
  • Natasha : Can’t wait for the return of 60s dialect too!
  • Bob Jonkman : TieDye and fringes!
  • Requiem : 70's was kinda Uniform for youth. Levi Jeans and T-Shirts with Jean Jackets......'earth shoes."
  • Natasha : Groovy
  • Bob Jonkman : (although I was only a youngster in the 1960s, and the 1970s certainly had a different style)
  • Requiem : Nehru Jackets and Love beads Bay-Bee!
  • Bob Jonkman : Hm. Stuff I could have worn elegantly in the 1960s would be downright scary on me today.
  • Requiem : Natasha's a Mary Quant Gal! Groovy!!
  • Natasha : Can’t wait for 60s fashion and music to make a comeback
  • Requiem : The Stones should be taught in all MBA courses world-wide! Brilliant Marketing. But the music capitalists know what will sell....
  • Bob Jonkman : There's a bit of 1980s SynthPop nostalgia now on aNONradio
  • Requiem : When I was a teen in the 70's 50's rock n roll was a rage too.....
  • Bob Jonkman : There was a big resurgence of nostalgic music in the 1980s, bringing back the 1950s Rock'n'Roll
  • Natasha : Speaking of marketing, Stones tix in Cleveland are going for +$1k. Few seats left.
  • Requiem : When youth get exposed to "Dad Rock" stuff, it blows them away!
  • Requiem : But yet......what is marketted so much and so big in 2023? Beatles and Stones from 60 years ago. Ironic....
  • Bob Jonkman : "Pop" is relative. What parents consider Pop isn't necessarily what their kids do
  • Natasha : ok, maybe not for the old. Perhaps because it’s boring?
  • Requiem : Its all part of the wonderful Tapestry of 20th century Popular music. Frankly, I love it all!!
  • Natasha : There are new genres every twenty years or so. With β€œpop” being a constant.
  • Bob Jonkman : Big bands, Rock'n'Roll, Punk, New Wave and SynthPop, Hip Hop. Maybe there's something there....
  • Bob Jonkman : If music ppularity is due to the rejection of Old People's Music, then there should be new genres every 20 years or so
  • Requiem : Hi Natasha! Well, the "old" people were not really that old in 1955.....and "Pop" music was still much bigger than Rock and Roll in that time. ie. Frank and Dean and Doris ruled the charts in those years......
  • Requiem : Actually the rationing was worse in the immediate post-war. During the war, Bands got enough Gas as it added to civilian morale.....
  • Bob Jonkman : In fact, I'd think the 40s was the peak of big bands
  • Natasha : The demise of big bands may be because the genre was for old people. My two cents
  • Bob Jonkman : I'd have thought gas rationing would have been worse during the war, but it there were still lots of big bands then.
  • Requiem : Big Bands couldn't get enough gasoline to transport all the members. Small "combos" could fit in a station wagon i.e. Bill Haley....Elvis...Buddy Holly....et al.
  • Requiem : He played acoustic rhythm on the original Sun Records Recordings with Scotty and Bill.
  • Bob Jonkman : There was also a musician's strike in the late 1940s that let (non-union) musicians flourish.
  • Bob Jonkman : Old Elvis may not have playef much guitar, but I've seen few pictures of young Elvis without a guitar
  • Requiem : It was the gas shortages caused by World War Two and the Draft that brought the demise of the Big Bands.....
  • Requiem : Elvis rarely played guitar
  • Bob Jonkman : If anything, the duration of big bands held back rock'n'roll
  • Requiem : All a timeline.....all integral.
  • Bob Jonkman : It was more the demise of the big bands (with their Bings &c) that brought R&R to the mainstream
  • Bob Jonkman : I dunno. The one constant amongst all the sub-genres of rock is that the singers are the musicians. The Bings, Dinos, & Franks don't fit that mold.
  • Requiem : Caruso....Rudy Vallee.....Bing...Frank..Dean.......all the Proto-Rockers. No Rock without their influence....
  • Requiem : The Lazy Show tonight on Requiem for Rock!
  • Requiem : An old rerun....too indolent to write a new show this week! Hi Bob!
  • Bob Jonkman : Or "proto-rock star"?
  • Bob Jonkman : Bing Crosby, "proto-rock-star"?
