CKMS Community Connections for 20 May 2024: Spring 2024 Fundraiser and Jax Rula of WEFT Fest

Show Notes

Spring 2024 Fundraiser

(chart showing the amount of money raised and number of pledges. This is dynamic, the numbers change as pledges are received)

Bob makes pitches for the Spring 2024 Fundraiser throughout the show. We’re raising funds to keep Radio Waterloo on the air — money raised will go towards maintenance of our equipment, offsetting increases in rent both for the studio and our transmitter, and generally dealing with inflation. There are prizes of T-shirts from Radio Waterloo, Street Hop, and All Weather Haulage, and CD compilations of music from local musicians.

Make your donation at https://radiowaterloo.ca/give.

4m30s Bob speaks with Jax Rula of WEFT Fest. Jax explains that on a loom the “warp” are the strings that go on the loom, and the “weft” are the strings that make the pattern. But WEFT is also the Woolwich Expressions in Fibre Traditions. Jax created a venue, the TriSisters Art House and wanted to be part of the Quilt and Fibre Arts Festival. But the ladies that ran it were retired, and to continue the festival Jax had to change the name. Jax tells us about the TriSisters Art House. It’s busy at the Vendors’ Market; Jax talks with some customers. Talking about some of the other events taking place during the ten days of the festival. Jax tells us about the items in the auction. Jax’s fibre art is dollmaking, and she tells us of alternate fibres, for example, paper. And Jax tells us about the Vendors’ Market in the Timber Barn, and some of the other events.

CKMS Community Connections for 19 June 2023: Fundraising and KWCon Music

Show Notes

A KWCon Musical Score

It’s the last day of spring for CKMS Community Connections, and time for our annual Spring Funding Drive! If you’re a fan of CCC or just Community Radio in general, help keep CKMS-FM on the air with a donation! Radio Waterloo is a cooperative, so you can become a member with a donation of $24 or more. Then you’ll get a vote in how the station is run, and you’ll get to host an episode of CKMS Community Connections!

At Radio Waterloo we do things you don’t hear on mainstream radio stations: Live, On-Air, In-Studio performances by local musicians; Extended interviews with local service agencies, advocacy groups, and social justice activists; In-depth reporting and analysis of local news; News programs from across Canada and the world; and, of course, as much local music as we can get our hands on.

Today I’m doing an all-music show with some of that local music (sorry, no podcast or bonus video!) to showcase Waterloo Region musicians, but it’s also because I’m so very behind in writing up the show notes and producing the podcasts for the last few CKMS Community Connections episodes with in-studio musicians. The music in-studio has been great, but the broadcasts and audio files have not always been so good. That’s because our studio equipment is older than most of the performers, and parts of it need repair or replacement. The sound board is missing some channels, the microphones need refurbishing, our transmitter is weak… We’d like to get a new transmitter so our signal reaches all parts of Waterloo Region, but the budget for equipment replacement got eaten up by the 50% increase in rent this year. So we really need your donation!

Thanx,
–Bob.

CKMS Community Connections for 14 February 2022: The Valentines Day Show

Show Notes

Black and white illustration of the heart shape with music notes in the middle.

It’s Valentines Day, and what better way to celebrate than by playing love songs? It’s a day for songs about true love, unrequited love, spurned love, lost love, and spiders.

Spiders? OK, I didn’t know how else to fit in a track from Active Dark Filament. Erroll Zastre writes:

“Lake of the Spiders”, I don’t know, a romantic place to take your significant other… get eaten by a giant spider? I’ve been watching too many Saturday night Svengoolie horror programs.

Also on the show today we have the debut radio performance of Talk by Living Room For Small. Many thanx to Owen for getting the track to us with virually no advance notice!

There’s also a teaser of the new single from The Boys & I, White Hot which comes out on all streaming platforms on Friday. We’ll have an interview with James Blacktop on our Friday afternoon episode at 3:00pm.

Did you ever see the Johnny Cash biopic Walk The Line? Until I saw that movie I didn’t know that Ring Of Fire was a love song written by June Carter Cash to Johnny Cash. We start off the show with a beautiful rendition by I, The Mountain.

Since there are no interviews but it’s all CanCon music (and mostly KWCon music) there won’t be a podcast. Sorry. Once the studio re-opens for guests I’ll step up my game and get people in for interviews, Live On-Air In-Studio performances, and podcasts.

–Bob.

CKMS Community Connections for 24 January 2022: More KWCon Music!

Show Notes

(Tan and green map of Waterloo Region showing the seven municipalities outlined with black lines)
Map of Waterloo Region where KWCon music comes from!

I am so behind in my e-mail. Almost a year behind. And that means that people from Waterloo Region who have been submitting music haven’t heard from me, and have probably given up hope of getting their music on the radio. To you I say Do Not Despair! I’m digging my way to the bottom of my InBox, and I will get to your music submissions. In fact, I’m playing a bunch of them today.

To submit your music send an e-mail to office@radiowaterloo.ca with the subject KWCon Music Submission (substitute CanCon if you’re not from Waterloo Region), and check out our detailed music submission guide.

I have now worked my way down to June in my InBox, and will probably do a few more KWCon shows in the next few weeks until all the backlog of both KWCon and CanCon submissions have been heard on the FM airwaves. So to start, here are today’s selections.
