Trail User & Stakeholder Informational Meeting

All users and stakeholders of G2G Rail Trail Inc. are invited to attend an informational meeting on March 25th, at Cowbell Brewery in Blyth, Ontario at 1:30pm. Executive Coordinator and Board of Directors for G2G Rail Trail Inc. will host this meeting along with local Trail Advisory Committees, MOU Partners, local Media and RTO4.
Please join us upstairs in Threshers Hall for networking with refreshments and light food (Alcoholic Beverages not included).

International Plowing Match Donation
It was sincere gratitude that Grace Vanden Heuvel, Executive Coordinator, G2G Rail Trail Inc. accepted Gerry Wheeler, IPM Chair – Tented City generous donation of $2000. Now that G2G Rail Trail Inc is open from end to end our primary goal is to continue to improve the rail trail corridor between Guelph, ON and Goderich, ON.
Our organization has been humbled by the vast number of supporters like Gerry and IPM who have stepped forward over the past few years. We thank everyone for their support and hope you, your friends and family are able to further enjoy this trail as we move forward with the financial support.

Come celebrate spring on the trail with our annual season opener – Spring on the Trail! SOTT is every communities chance to get on the trail and welcome those who use the trail. Local businesses, clubs, committees, etc will have fun activities along the trail as a chance to meet and greet the trail users. Always a fun day at the beautiful Ariss Valley Golf and Country Club. Whack a ball around the course, win a prize, raise money. Registration starts at 11 am, boxed lunch and steak dinner included. This will be the 7th year our local supporters have joined together to help improve the Kissing Bridge section of the G2G Rail Trail.Canada Rides G2G – 4 Day Rail Trail Ride June 29th – July 2nd, 2018 (FRI – MON)
Annually the Week of Canada Day Long Weekend – 127 km of pure Canadian trail waiting to be filled with celebratory strides and rides. This year we invite you to ride the distance with a whole bunch of like-minded folks. The ride will be include staging areas for those who wish to camp, a SAG vehicle for hauling gear, emergency services and a mobile bike repair vehicle. You don't have to leave SWO to explore on your bike!
Even if you can't join us we still challenge you to do the full 127km (150km with detours) this year.Annual BBQ and General Meeting July 18, 2018 (WED)
Learn what's happened on the trail over the past year and where it will be going in the next. A great evening out to share your enthusiasm for the trail! Save the date and watch for details. The final location will be announced in our next newsletter.

Up to the Challenge...
Meeting the People on Your Trail
Did you bike your 150 during Canada’s 150? Seventy-five year old Jim Bauman sure did – he averages at least 5000 km per year on his wheels. No that is not a typo – Five. Thousand. Part of that was indeed the entire G2G Rail Trail and he generously shared his experiences with us.
As a member of the Easy Riders cycling group and a cycling enthusiast extraordinaire, Jim is out on the trails or the roads almost every snowless day. He has always enjoyed biking, and has often done longer trips with his wife and friends in West Virginia, around Lake Ontario’s 120km Waterfront Trail as well as touring around Lake Erie and the P’tit Trail du Nord in Quebec just to name a few.
Jim discovered the Kissing Bridge Trailway (KBT) nearly 25 years ago when he and his family moved spitting distance from it and he’s been a regular on the trail ever since. He’ll often ride from Elmira to Guelph or Millbank, meeting at the turnaround for a meal date with his wife before heading back but until a G2G newsletter about #Canadarides150 and the IPM by the trail in Walton this past September hadn’t realized riding the entire G2G was a possibility.
Although he has done over 100km in one day on paved roads this past summer he decided to break it down in chunks.
The first leg was McNaught Line to Blyth and contained one detour that has since happily become unnecessary with the opening of the Blyth Brook Bridge in the fall.Going from Blyth to Goderich he was able to experience the unique vista from the Mennesetung Bridge overlooking the Maitland River and out to the shore of Lake Huron.
Elmira to Millbank is old hat to Jim, but the next sections from Millbank to Milverton and the on to Walton were more of a challenge and also provided the most memorable moments of his G2G ride. Since he completed his ride there have been more bridges installed at Monkton and Millbank making the route more easily passable by bike but at the time he roughed it over a few fences and detoured again in Walton. It was also on the Perth Harvest Pathway that he shared the trail with a group of Mennonite children on scooters with fat tires as well as a herd of sheep!After completing all sections of the G2G Jim shared his journey with us and made suggestions for improvements along the trail to ease the passage for future riders, including himself – he plans on doing the whole trail again in a two day trip as soon as it is fully connected.

In early December with the help of local Steward Group – The Milverton Lions Club, the installation of another kiosk was completed in Milverton at the trail-head located just off CPR Drive. This kiosk will enhance accessibility to the trail and help to promote, educate and increase public use of the Perth Harvest Pathway section. Once all phases are complete with signage and maps, trail users who live in or visit this community will be greeted with information about the trail, way-finding information for the area, and a resting point. This project was made possible with a grant from our partner the Stratford Perth Community Foundation through the International Plowing Match 2005 Fund.
Gateway and G2G Join Forces
New partnership sharing healthy goals
G2G is very excited to formalize a partnership with Gateway Centre of Excellence in Rural Health. Director of Operations Chris Lee met with Gateway director Jay McFarlan last month to sign a Memorandum of Understanding and provide another avenue to support and encourage healthy living in rural Ontario.
Gateway is a non profit research group that directs research and promotion with a goal to improve “the quality of life and overall health” right in G2G’s neighbourhood and we are pleased to find ways to work with them throughout the 13 communities we connect.

1st Annual G2G Fall Colours Ride
Sunday October 22nd, 2017, G2G proudly hosted its first Fall Colours Fundraising Ride for Hospital and Hospice. Thirty-four riders took advantage of the gorgeous weather to cycle 28km and raise nearly $11,000. Twenty percent of the funds raised will be put towards the trail while the remainder to the essential works of the AMGH Hospital Foundation and the Huron Residential Hospice.
Milverton Trail-head
Hardworking volunteers from G2G, Stratford Perth Community Foundation and Milverton Lions Club joined forces in early December to build and install a new kiosk for your information and resting pleasure! Maps to follow later this year…
Bridges
Just a quick “humble brag” to remind you of the three new bridges that were installed along the G2G last year in Walton, Monkton and Millbank. Plans are underway for even more bridges over the next 2-3 years as we keep moving forward to our ultimate goal: 147 km of fully accessible, safe and healthy rail trail. PUB CAROLS WITH THE ORANGE PEEL CAROLLERS SUNDAY DECEMBER 17TH, 2017, Cambridge ON

Following a time-honoured tradition from the north of England, a group of local friends under the banner of the Orange Peel Carollers will be gathering on Sunday, Dec. 17 at the KIWI to sing what are known as Village or Pub Carols.
These carols are not the standard Christmas stock we hear piped into every mall; they are often more boisterous and secular in nature than the familiar fare.
They have been preserved in the pub environment in several Yorkshire villages for at least the past 200 years. In some cases, these carols were frowned upon by the church of the time, and dropped from the order of service. They were sometimes retained by only one congregation, village, or family and were held with great pride and even jealousy. Pub carols are regaining popularity in England.
The Pub carolling tradition in Canada was started in Ottawa around 1990 and has proven quite popular there.
The song book the group will use for several of the carols is a publication from the Ottawa Folklore Centre entitled The Canadian Pub Caroller. It combines traditional English carols with some long-forgotten early Canadian hymns and carols.
The Orange Peel Carollers like to think that they are doing their part to maintain the tradition and help it take root our local area.
Most of the carols will be unfamiliar to modern ears, but with their folky sound and rousing choruses, some are very easy to learn. Other songs will be more familiar, but with a twist.

2017 marks the 25th anniversary of the CHYM Tree of Hope Radiothon, bringing hope to local children, youth and families
Thursday, December 7, 2017
5 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Kitchener – December 4, 2017 – For 25 years, the CHYM Tree of Hope Radiothon has given people the chance to hear about families, children and youth in our community who have faced big challenges – and how Family and Children’s Services of the Waterloo Region, and generous community members who have contributed to its Foundation, have helped them heal, learn and grow.
On December 7, local families will share moving stories on air as part of the Radiothon.
· You’ll hear from Kalsoom, whose son developed better social skills and a more positive outlook thanks to a special theatre program he was enrolled in.
· You’ll learn about how the Sexual Abuse Treatment Program helped one teen heal after she endured years of abuse.
· An adoptive father will describe how he and his wife made the decision to adopt an older child – and the joy she has brought into their lives.
The Family & Children’s Services Foundation is encouraging community members to consider making a donation so that these important programs will continue to be available all year long to those who need the extra support. It all comes together for one amazing day of caring that makes a big difference in the lives of families, children and youth.
Special guests will join us throughout the day, with opportunities for photos in our photo booth, including:

A FREE Workshop for Sport Instructors and Coaches
The KW Sports Council has partnered with the Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women and Sport and Physical Activity (CAAWS) and Coaching Association of Canada (CAC) to offer a free physical literacy training workshop for Instructors and Coaches.
In this workshop you will:
• Learn what motivates women 55-70+ to be active
• Better understand what helps build confidence/competence
in physical activity and sport for women 55-70+
• Receive training in NCCP Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS)
• Learn FMS adaptations/considerations for women 55-70+
• Learn about how incorporating FMS can increase physical

Meet your favourite Canadian authors at Waterloo Public Library’s annual fundraiser
On Friday, November 17th, Waterloo Public Library will be holding its 4th annual fundraiser,
After Hours @ The Library. In celebration of Canada 150, this year’s event will give attendees the chance to get “up close and personal” with a few of our favourite Canadian authors.
Waterloo Public Library is thrilled to welcome writers Ian Hamilton, Donna-Marie Pye, Andrew Pyper and Carrie Snyder to our Main Library for an extraordinary evening of conversation, food and drink. Attendees can chat with authors, mingle
over cocktails (our Information Services desk makes a great bar!) and indulge in delicious canapés and desserts.
Each year, After Hours @ The Library receives incredible support from local businesses, restaurants and caterers in the form of food sponsorship and prize donations.
“We are extremely thankful for the dedicated support of our community partners who, year after year, donate generously to our fundraiser” says Laurie Clarke, Waterloo Public Library’s CEO. “Without them, this event wouldn’t be possible.
We sincerely appreciate their commitment to supporting the library and helping us in not only raising funds but creating a unique event that brings the community together.”
Since its inception in 2014, this dynamic fundraiser has been incredibly successful and this year’s event promises to be the biggest one yet. With draw prizes valued at over $5,000, a Silent Auction that features two tickets to anywhere
in the world WestJet flies, and appetizers from Bhima’s Warung, e.v.o Kitchen, Famoso, Just Love Pie, Little Mushroom Catering and Winnie’s Gluten-Free Kitchen, this event is a perfect opportunity to enjoy an exciting evening in Uptown Waterloo and find out
what happens at the library “after hours”.

Public Encouraged to vote for Bullying Ends Here through Industrial Alliance Website

Vancouver, B.C. – Bullying Ends Here and its founder, Tad Milmine, are asking the public for their votes, as the organization vies to win the #1 spot and a $125,000 prize, courtesy of Industrial Alliance, among a group of “Top 10” not-for-profit organizations from across Canada.
For the month of November, the public is being kindly asked to vote for the charity they believe is the most deserving of $125,000.
Bullying Ends Here President and Founder Tad Milmine says: “Thanks so much to Industrial Alliance for this phenomenal opportunity. It is an honour to stand alongside these 9 organizations, each of whom is doing critically important work in communities across the country.”
He adds: “Winning would allow Bullying Ends Here to spend more time in communities, speaking to youth. It would help us reach those that need it most and it would allow us to continue with not only changing lives, but saving them, so we would appreciate your vote.”
Since starting the organization four years ago, Tad has shared his anti-bullying message with over 250,000 youth around the world and has combatted bullying in all forms across the country.
Tad adds: “You can vote once per email address and every vote truly counts. Being able to continue to reach youth and discuss the topics of bullying is invaluable. With your vote, you can help inspire and save these children.”
Voting ends on November 30th and the winner will be announced on December 11th. The public can vote both on the Bullying Ends Here website, or at the Industrial Alliance website.
To encourage voting, Tad is also offering an exciting prize pack to one lucky voter.

Calgary Police Constable Tad Milmine spent his teenage years a victim of bullying. In 2011, after reading about the suicide of 15-year-old Jamie Hubley, an openly gay Ontario youth bullied relentlessly for his sexuality, Tad was inspired to take his personal struggle public. He is the founder of Bullying Ends Here and travels across the world speaking with young people about the real effects of bullying. He has spoken all across North America and Europe and has reached close to 250,000 youth in person.
