Today’s feature will be two interviews with anti-gentrification organisers in Vancouver, conducted by Tyson Leonard with the Vancouver Media Coop. These interviews will discuss the need for diversity in Vancouver’s anti-gentrification movement, and which structures best resist gentrification in anti-gentrification organising.

The Daily GRRR! HEADLINES for May 28, 2014

1. March Against Monsanto
On Saturday, millions of people took to the streets around the world in protest of Monsanto. More than 400 demonstrations were held in 52 countries, including nearby in Brantford and Six Nations. Opposition to Monsanto stems from serious concerns including the patenting of seeds, interfering with traditional farming practices and making farmers dependent on the multinational for their seeds each year, the furthering of monocultures as Monsanto seeds replace a plethora of traditional varieties, the potential for unknown mutations to occur in genetically modified seeds, the health effects of eating genetically modified foods for which no long term studies have ever been conducted, and the potential for genetically modified crops to contaminate non-genetically modified varieties. Failures of the crops to perform as advertised also have harrowing consequences, as evidenced by the epidemic of farmer suicides in India after Monsanto’s Bt cotton failed. Youth organisers of the Brantford-Six Nations demo were quoted in the Two Row Times as saying, “Nobody is going to have control over their own food, that’s scary. If you’re concerned about your health, then you should be concerned about this corporation.”

2. Food Prospects Drying Up
Following up on a story we covered earlier, the severity of drought plaguing much of the United States has led California to implement restrictions on water use during the summer, which will affect the irrigation of farms. This is California’s third year of what officials are calling a catastrophic drought. As a result, farmers are forced to leave nearly a half million acres of land uncultivated, and some small communities are at risk of running out of drinking water. The regulations are based on a set minimum level of water in 3 watersheds surrounding the Sacramento River, which need to be maintained when fish are present. The move was met with stern opposition from farmers and others who hold rights to the water.

3. Pan Am costs soaring
New revelations about the cost of the 2015 PanAm games in Toronto are coming out from Patrick Allen, the recently-fired director of EMS and health and safety services for the games. Allen comments, “The amount of spending …read more

1. Vancouver Police Officer Pleads Not Guilty In Cyclist Assault

In a rare case of a police officer actually being charged for an on duty assault, a Vancouver constable Ismail Bhabha has pled not guilty to assaulting a cyclist who he claims was not wearing a helmet, went through a red light, and resisted arrest.

In March 2013, Andishae​ Akhavan Kharazi was punched in the face by the officer while his arms were behind his back, being cuffed. The assault is clearly visible in a video recorded by Andishae’s friend.

2. Former Cop Convicted of Sexually Assaulting An Underage Women

A former Saskatchewan cop, who sexually assaulted his 9 year old step-granddaughter has been sentenced to 30 months in jail after a plea agreement with prosecutors which may protect his identity.

The 57 year old assaulted the girl over a 11 month period starting in September 2012 when she was brought by family to his house. The former police officer photographed the assaults and was confronted by his wife and the family of …read more

Today’s feature comes to us from free city radio on CKUT. It’s an interview with Clive Stafford Smith, who is campaigner at Reprieve, a legal organization working internationally to campaign against the illegality of the US military drone strikes currently taking place in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen, Somalia and beyond. The interview focuses on the impacts experienced by communities targeted by the US strikes.

The Daily GRRR! HEADLINES for May 22, 2014

1. No Integrity, No Digs! An Enbridge integrity dig site on Line 9 near Burlington was blocked yesterday by activists opposing the pipeline project. The line has over 12 000 anomalies—features that could cause it to fail—so the blockade was held for 12 hours, one hour for every thousand such anomalies. Despite this high number of problems, Enbridge is only conducting a few hundred integrity digs, and a recent report has predicted that Line 9 has a 90% chance of failure in the near term. This flagrant disregard for safety is one reason the project has received massive opposition, alongside Enbridge’s failure to consult Indigenous communities, and the pipeline’s facilitation of tar sands and fracking expansion. The site of yesterday’s blockade is near Bronte Creek, on traditional Mississauga territory, a creek which flows into Lake Ontario. Blockader Danielle Boissineau states, “At every step of the process, the Tar Sands outsources the risks onto our communities and poisons waterways like the Athabasca River and the Bronte creek while companies like Enbridge get rich.”
Line 9 has received the green light from the National Energy Board after public hearings which have been widely criticised as exclusive, and with a decision that did not address the vast majority of evidence presented.

2. Killer Robots
The first multilateral summit on fully autonomous weapons—killer robots—wrapped up last Friday at the United Nations in Geneva. Many governments present expressed their desire for human decisions and control over attacks in warfare, ensuring the human element of killing doesn’t get erased by drones.
Fully autonomous weapons have not yet been developed, but technology is moving in that direction. This type of weapon would select and attack targets without further action by a human operator. 87 countries participated in the four-day Convention on Conventional Weapons meeting of experts on lethal autonomous weapons systems.
