Kitchener, ON – Waterloo Region has moved forward with a new 10 Year Housing and Homelessness Plan as local community housing waitlists reach historic highs.
According to regional data presented on October 6, 2026, nearly 11,300 households were on the waitlist at year end 2025, while wait times have stretched past a decade for one bedroom units and over 12 years for larger family homes.
Presenting the plan, Director of Housing Ryan Pettipiere reminded council that real lives sit behind the escalating statistics. “Every data point represents a real person,” Pettipiere said. He pointed to early progress in flattening the homelessness curve, but warned that “there are serious challenges ahead without strengthened and sustained investments in solutions.”
Commissioner of Community Services Peter Sweeney also addressed systemic root causes, noting that “we cannot have any discussion about solving chronic homelessness if we do not also address economic insecurity and poverty.”
With local taxpayers already covering 65 percent of the Region’s $68.6 million homelessness budget, staff emphasized that municipal resources alone cannot close the gap without long term operating support from provincial and federal governments.
“Hitting the ground running” with Carly Pettinger. Election day is October 26. Advanced voting starts on October 13th for Kitchener and October 10th for Waterloo. See www.kitchener.ca and www.waterloo.ca respectively for times and locations.
Synthwave Music
A spotlight on the synthwave microgenre, which developed in the mid-to-late 2000s and was inspired by the movies, music, video games, and pop culture of the 1980s, attempting to capture the era’s atmosphere and celebrate it (albeit a romanticized, retro-futuristic version of it).
The Tune Up plays an evolving mix of jazz which blends between classic, experimental and raw sounds. The first track, Ode To Pharoah was sampled by Navy Blue in ‘Ode2MyLove’. Pianist Cedar Walton is featured on the next two tracks: a version of ‘Naima’ by Steve Grossman and ‘Father And Son’ by Freddie Hubbard. Following up is more great hard bop. Ending the mix with a soul track as usual, I played Norris Vines and The Luvlines with ‘Give In’ – released in Canada on Smile Records in 1977.
Tracks played:
Azar Lawrence – Ode To Pharoah
Steve Grossman, Cedar Walton, David Williams, Billy Higgins – Naima
Freddie Hubbard – Father And Son
Jackie McLean – Just For Now
Duke Pearson – Fly Little Bird Fly
Shirley Scott – Shades Of Bu
Oscar Peterson – Wandering
Joni Mitchell – Black Crow (Live)
Gil Scott-Heron – Spirits
João Bosco – A Nível De…
Norris Vines and The Luvlines – Give In
The Tune Up airs here on CKMS Radio Waterloo every Friday from 6-7pm.

Scams targeting seniors are on the rise. In 2024, older adults in Canada lost 178 million dollars to financial scams, a 300 percent increase from 2020, according to a House of Commons committee report. This is also an underrepresentation, since many people do not report when they’ve been scammed, out of embarrassment.
Radio Waterloo interviewed Cosmin Munteanu, an associate professor at the University of Waterloo, and the Schlegel Research Chair in Technology for Healthy Aging at the Research Institute for Aging, as well as David Parkinson, founder of the John Parkinson Family Foundation to understand why senior-targeted scams on are the rise, the signs of senior financial abuse, the most common types of scams, and how to take proactive action.
