UNREST: ME/CFS documentary at the Princess Twin Cinemas in Waterloo

The Waterloo Wellington Myalgic Encephalomyelitis Association (WWMEA) is pleased to present UNREST (for free) on Tue. May 1, 2018, 7:00 PM EDT at the Princess Twin Cinemas, 46 King Street North, Waterloo, ON  N2J 2W8.
Register for free here:

Jennifer Brea's Sundance award-winning documentary, Unrest, is a personal journey from patient to advocate to storyteller. Jennifer is twenty-eight years-old, working on her PhD at Harvard, and months away from marrying the love of her life when a mysterious fever leaves her bedridden. When doctors tell her it's "all in her head," she picks up her camera as an act of defiance and brings us into a hidden world of millions that medicine abandoned.

Quote from Vogue magazine:
"… the documentary is not only for those suffering from chronic illnesses – it’s for everyone, especially those who feel they cannot relate. In the same way that we don’t need to be in love when we read a love story, viewers don’t need to be sick in order to participate in the much-needed conversation that Brea’s documentary proposes. In fact, participation and engagement by a more diverse population is not only preferable, it’s crucial. Millions of people currently have some diagnosis of chronic illness, with a reported 15 to 30 million people worldwide reportedly suffering from ME/CFS alone."

M.E. is a poorly understood, invisible chronic illness. Anyone familiar with M.E. or other invisible chronic illnesses such as Fibromyalgia, Lupus, Multiple Sclerosis, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Complex Regional Pain Syndrome or Multiple Chemical Sensitivity will appreciate Jennifer's story.

MCC Milverton Thrift Shop Closure

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

After an in-depth review, Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) Ontario’s Director of Social Enterprise, Jan Martens Janzen, regretfully announces the closure of the MCC New to You Thrift Shop in Milverton, Ontario, effective June 30, 2018.

“We deeply appreciate the dedication shown by the staff, volunteers, customers and churches who have supported the New to You Thrift Shop and we recognize the impact of this difficult decision.” says Martens Janzen.

“The ministry of the New to You Thrift Shop has contributed to MCC’s work around the world as well as to the community in and around Milverton. Many families have had access to good quality fairly-priced goods, many volunteers have experienced meaningful work opportunities, and many donors have given their gently used items in support of MCC’s relief, development and peace work in the name of Christ.” continued Martens Janzen. “We thank everyone for their many years of commitment to the mission of MCC.”

The New to You Thrift Shop opened in 1989 and was the seventh MCC Thrift Shop to open in Ontario. New to You has contributed more than $700,000 to Mennonite Central Committee’s work of relief, development and peace in Ontario and around the world since it opened.

Mennonite Central Committee operates seven thrift shops in Ontario and an additional 90 in Canada and the U.S.  Each year MCC Thrift Shops in Ontario are able to divert more than 4,000 tonnes from landfills.  In 2017 MCC Thrift Shops in Canada contributed over $20 million to the mission of MCC.

What’s that song from O.N.-J. in the ’80’s ? “Let’s get political”?

We do just that, in our own way on In Studio With Kevin, as we have a pleasant, constructive conversation with Mike Schreiner, leader of the Green Party of Ontario.

Articulate, passionate, kind, smart. A few words to describe Mike.

Listen in to a wonderful chat about the future of Ontario. We lay to rest several myths, namely that being green means less jobs. It is the opposite.  That and much more, I think Kevin even trolls the other party leaders…..

A huge thank you to Mike for spending time In Studio With Kevin, connecting with people of the region and beyond.

Bulletin: Province Expands Disaster Recovery Assistance for Ontarians in Brantford

Updated: Province Expands Disaster Recovery Assistance for Ontarians in Brantford

April 12, 2018

Ontario has expanded
the activation area for the
Disaster Recovery Assistance for Ontarians program in the
City of Brantford
(see map).

Minister of Municipal Affairs Bill Mauro activated the program in Brantford on February 27, 2018 following flooding along the Grand River. Expanding the original activation
area will allow more residents who were affected by the flood to submit claims for assistance.

Additional areas on the west bank of the Grand River and south of Baldwin Avenue are now eligible for assistance.

Due to the expansion of the activation area, the deadline to submit claims for applicants from Brantford is extended to
August 10, 2018.

Deep thaw and heavy rains between February 19 and 21, 2018 led to
flooding that damaged homes along the Grand River. Parts of Brantford were evacuated due to an ice jam that was released, sending water surging into the city.

Individuals, small businesses and not-for-profit organizations that have experienced property damage or loss as a result of this disaster may be eligible to receive help with
emergency and recovery expenses. The program provides reimbursement of expenses incurred but may also offer interim payments to those who need upfront help.

The program applies to a primary residence and its basic contents, or to main small business premises, a farm or not-for-profit organization. Damage from sewer backup is not
eligible under the program except under special provisions for low-income households.

More information and detailed program guidelines are available at
ontario.ca/DisasterAssistance or
call toll-free 1-844-780-8925.
