What does “Sauerkraut and Enterprise” have to do with Book Sales and Scholarships?

For Immediate Release

What does “Sauerkraut and Enterprise” have to do with Book Sales and Scholarships?

Waterloo, April 9, 2018: Canadian Federation of University Women Kitchener-Waterloo (CFUW K-W) announces its 54th Annual Used Book Sale on Friday, April 20th and Saturday, April 21st, 2018.

The first used book sale was the vision of the late Edna Staebler, writer, philanthropist, and member of CFUW K-W. In 1964, Ms. Staebler suggested organizing a used book sale to raise funds to support local scholarships. Since then, funds raised at their annual book sale have helped CFUW K-W recognize and encourage educational excellence by offering scholarships and awards at the secondary and post-secondary levels in the Kitchener-Waterloo Region, and nationally. Since its founding in 1922, CFUW K-W has awarded close to $500,000 in scholarships.

Each year, thanks to generous donations from the community, CFUW K-W offers an incredible selection of pre-screened, top quality used books, starting at just $1, including hard and soft cover books for adults, youth and children, CDs, DVDs, talking books, sheet music. On Saturday, the final day of the sale, shoppers can take home any boxful of books for only $10.

Where: First United Church, 16 William St W, Waterloo, ON N2L 1J3

When: Book donations can be dropped off on April 18, 2018 between 9 am and 9 pm and April 19 between 9 am and 6 pm. The Book Sale runs from 9 am to 9 pm on April 20 and 9 am to 1 pm on April 21, 2018.

CFUW K-W is the local chapter of CFUW, a national, non-partisan, voluntary and self-funded organization, and one of 100 such clubs across Canada. CFUW works to improve the status of women, promoting human rights, public education, social justice, and peace.  CFUW holds special consultative status with the United Nations (ECOSOC) and belongs to the Education Committee of the Canadian Commission for UNESCO.

Mapleton Receiving Flood-Damage Assistance

Ontario Funding Local Recovery Efforts

NEWS                                                                                                                          April 4, 2018

Ontario is providing financial support through the Municipal Disaster Recovery Assistance (MDRA) program to help the Township of Mapleton with recovery efforts for flood damage that occurred last year.

Significant rainfall on June 22 and 23, 2017 caused widespread flooding throughout Midwestern Ontario. The funds will help with culvert and road repairs, and rebuilding shoreline infrastructure in Mapleton. The township may be eligible for as much as $359,601 in provincial funding under the program.

The MDRA program helps municipalities address extraordinary emergency response costs and damage to essential property or infrastructure like bridges, roads and public buildings, as a result of a natural disaster.

QUOTES

“Helping communities recover after natural disasters is a priority for our government. I am pleased that Mapleton is able to access the funding it needs to make essential repairs to local infrastructure that was damaged by last year’s spring floods.”

— Bill Mauro, Minister of Municipal Affairs

QUICK FACTS

§  The province delivers the MDRA program, which provides funding to eligible municipalities using a cost-sharing formula.

§  A municipality may be eligible under the MDRA program if its disaster-related costs reach a threshold of three per cent of its Own-Purpose Taxation levy.

§  The MDRA program was activated in Clarence-Rockland, Frontenac Islands, Horton, Killaloe, Hagarty and Richards and Lincoln in 2017 to help offset costs associated with flood recovery efforts and damage to public infrastructure. Ontario has committed up to $2.3 million to help cover response costs and damage to infrastructure in these communities.

Waterloo, Ontario – Today, HopeSpring Cancer Support Centre officially announces the Household China Community Donation Matching Drive effective April 2nd – 7th, 2018.

In partnership with their retirement and liquidation, Household China was inspired to place the spotlight on HopeSpring Cancer Support Centre. Many previous and existing customers, family, friends, acquaintances and vendors of Household China have been affected by cancer in their lives, and this was
a way to give back to the community while honoring those that remain dear to Household China’s heart. Traudie Kauntz, owner of Household China is currently facing her own battle with cancer. Donations will be matched up to a maximum of $10,000. Donations may be made by visiting www.hopespring.ca, by phone (519) 742- HOPE (4673), or in person (at the back entrance of the Inn of Waterloo), 475 King St. N, Waterloo, ON.

“We have been blessed with this generous offer from Household China. In our year of establishing sustainability, this initiative could not have come at a better time. Household China has been a big supporter of HopeSpring over the years and was a famous contributor to our Holiday Home Tour. We thank Traudie and the team at Household China for believing in the free cancer care programming we offer to the community. If you have ever thought of supporting HopeSpring, now is the perfect time to maximize your donation!” – Shuchanna Swaby, Board Chair

“I have known several people who have used the services at HopeSpring over the years. Their stories have moved me in a deep way, especially now that I am facing my own cancer journey. I believe living life fully and making a difference is all that truly matters. It was a natural fit to offer matching donations to HopeSpring Cancer Support Centre. I am urging the community, businesses, the movers and shakers of the community to reach deep into their pockets and help HopeSpring during this blitz. I am so looking forward to helping HopeSpring in this way.” Traudie Kauntz, Owner
