Radio Waterloo will be at Kiwanis Park in Kitchener on Saturday 12 September 2026 to encourage walkers, riders, rollers, and all participants in the Walk For Parkinson’s event.

Tune in from 10:00am to 1:00pm to listen to the live broadcast. We’ll talk to organizers, participants, spectators, and play some music to keep the walkers going. The Radio Waterloo Astrologer predicts a sunny morning, come join us at Kiwanis Park in Kitchener!

It is that time of the year — the 2025 Annual General Meeting is being held on Wednesday 20 August 2025 from 6:00pm to 7:00pm (Eastern Standard Time). It’s a hybrid meeting, both online and in-person at the Civic Hub. Come in the doors on Duke Street; ring the bell to the right of the doors if they’re locked.

Everyone is invited, but only members in good standing can vote on resolutions or in the election for Board of Directors.

The AGM package of documents will be sent out to members 48 hours before the meeting.

The Golden MP3 Awards were given out at the Radio Waterloo Membership Appreciation Night on Saturday 15 March 2025 to shows that aired in 2024.

If you’ve won an award but didn’t make it to Membership Appreciation Night then you can pick up your award certificates at the studio, in the file holder under the deposit box.

DJ AdRock: Street Hop — Carmelo Farruggio

DJ Adrock Memorial Award is given for exceptional DJing. First awarded in 2012. Last year’s winner was Father To Son (Ben Van Osch and Gary Van Osch).

Community Radio Award: Welcome To The Civic Hub — Ritika Shrimali

Given to a show that exemplifies what Community Radio is all about. First awarded in 2013, then known as The Local Hero Award. Last year’s winner was Atardecer Ranchero (Felix Grande).

LP Show: Interzone — Coral Andrews

Awarded to a great Long Playing show that has been on the air for three or more years. First awarded in 2013. Last year’s winner was Interzone (Coral Andrews).

Freshest Beats: Through The Static — Jordan Kalist

Awarded to a show in the first three years of existence. First awarded in 2013. Last year’s winner was Through The Static (Jordan Kalist).

Talk Focused Show: Readers Delight — Jody Swannell and Richard Stephens

Culturally Diverse: Atardecer Ranchero — Felix Grande

Either best show expanding the cultural diversity of the station or a show that features many diverse cultures or features a culture that is under-represented in the area. First awarded in 2016. Last year’s winner was Mazaj Show (Bassam Awwad).

Graphic Material: Radio Nowhere — Don Janzen

Awarded to the show with best supporting images either through a poster, logo, or website posts. First awarded in 2015. Last year’s winner was From The Void (Chris Sherren).

Most Original: Unlimited Fortune — John Keating and Stephen Baltus

Awarded to a show that is very original and can only be found on Radio Waterloo. First awarded in 2014. Last year’s winner was Unlimited Fortune (Stephen Baltus, John Keating).

Sonic Boom: No Crap Radio — PJ Smith

The name is an homage to the old sonic boom awards and is given to a show playing great music. First awarded as a Golden MP3 Award in 2018, but dates back to at least 2006. Last year’s winner was Truth Radio (Mandeep Chagger).

SoundFM Soldier: Jeff Stager — (Programming Committee Coordinator)

The SoundFM Soldier award is given to members who have put in a lot of work behind the scenes to keep Radio Waterloo Community Radio alive. The name is an homage to the past nickname of the station and the hard work that people did at that time to move the station from the UW campus and to become its own entity) *This award is often given to two people. First awarded as a Golden MP3 Award in 2013, but dates back to the time the transmitter was relocated to the Albert Street location (2008?). Last year’s winners were Gary Van Osch and Barbara Urbach for painting the studio.

Video Crown the Radio Star: Community Connections — (Jenniefer Stronge)

Given to the show that best utilizes the studio video system to support their program. First awarded in 2018, then called Video King The Radio Star. Last year’s winner was Community Connections (Jenniefer Stronge, Jeff Stager, Bob Jonkman).

Teamwork Transition: Bandwidth — The Bandwidth Crew, and So Old It’s New — Karlo Berkovich

Given to the best 1-2 seamless transition programs on Radio Waterloo. First awarded in 2018. Last year’s winners were Wax Jungle (Raph Kanai, Maciek Gudrymowicz, Carmelo Farruggio) and Pressure Drop (Nat Persaud).

Given to the show that best uses Remote Live-To-Air. First awarded in 2020 when Remote Live-To-Air kits were made available to keep programmers on the air during Covid 19. Last year’s winner was Virasat Radio (Baljinder Tamber).

CKMS at Winterloo on Saturday 25 January 2025

Winterloo is Waterloo’s yearly, free, Winter celebration, visited by thousands and held in Uptown Waterloo. With ice carvers, skating in the Square, entertained by DJ King Kadeem, you can enjoy hot drinks, food trucks, and giant games with your friends and family. The event starts at Noon and runs til 5 pm.

2023 Golden MP3 Award Winners

The Golden MP3 Awards were awarded at the CKMS Golden MP3 Awards Party 2024 held at the Ouroboros Sports Lounge on 9 March 2024. And also on 10 March 2024, since the party went long into the night.

There was entertainment by Jordan Kalist, Atomica, Tristan Stronge, Eddy Cabral, Burnaby, and HolliZay, with DJ Natty Physicist and DJ Carmelo filling in between sets. And the evening was Live-To-Air on CKMS-FM 102.7 Radio Waterloo, so a good time was had by all, even those who couldn’t be there in person.

CKMS-FM at Winterloo

Radio Waterloo had a booth at Winterloo this past Saturday, 17 February 2024. We were supposed to broadcast live from 11:00am to 5:00am, but it was cold! How cold was it? It was so cold that the computer we use to link to the studio froze up! Our wonderful Technical Committee managed to find another computer, which we put inside the DJ Dome so it wouldn’t freeze up too. But that meant we couldn’t use our microphones to chat with the people at Winterloo. Happily, DJ King Kadeem did an excellent job as a radio host, so our Live To Air broadcast was a success!

We are attending Winterloo! This is the second time, as we were there in 2019 as well (super chilly that year). Come out say hello! Winterloo has stuff for the whole family.

*New location. Due to mild weather many of the wintery activities are cancelled. Thereof, Winterloo Lite will take place in Waterloo Public Square. Come find us!

2023 Golden MP3 Nominations

See the results of the 2023 CKMS Golden MP3 Contest!
2023 was a year of revival. The station passed its 45 year anniversary: Radio Waterloo was incorporated on 18 January 1978, and went on-air on 15 October 1978. In 2023 the studio was open again after being closed for Covid in previous years, we welcomed a number of new programmers and new shows, and added a whole bunch of music to our library.

The Golden MP3 Awards are the opportunity to recognize exceptional show hosts, producers, their programs, and the people who work behind the scenes. The awards ceremony will be held at our 2024 Membership Recognition Night, starting at 4:00pm and going to after Midnight on Saturday, 9 March 2024 at the Ouroboros Sports Lounge, 101 Hazelglen Drive, Kitchener Map

You can nominate a show for more than one award, and nominate more than one show for an award, or skip an award altogether. If you complete this nomination form but find you forgot to nominate a show, you can fill in another nomination form. ~~Nominations close at 11:59pm Sunday, 14 January 2024.~~ Since the awards are not until March, nominations are extended until 11:59pm on Sunday, 11 February 2024!

Join the CKMS programmers, show hosts, DJs, and other volunteers as they kick out the Old Year, play a few tunes, dance up a storm, and ring in the New Year.

The fun starts at 8:30pm on Saturday 31 December 2023 and goes to 1:00am on 1 January 2024. Listen on the radio at CKMS-FM at 102.7 Radio Waterloo, or the online stream at https://radiowaterloo.ca/listen, where you can send your New Year’s greetings in the chatbox!

The 2023 Annual General Meeting for Radio Waterloo will be held on Saturday, 26 August 2023:

When: 1:00pm to 2:00pm, Saturday 26 August 2023
Where: CH Meeting Room, Country Hills branch, Kitchener Public Library
Location: 1500 Block Line Road, Kitchener Map
Online: https://radiowaterloo.ca/meeting (Google Meet)

For those who can’t attend in person and can’t use Google Meet, a phone number for dialling in to the online meeting will be provided closer to the AGM date.

A complete package with information for the Annual General Meeting is available to members on request. It will contain the meeting agenda, last year’s AGM minutes, financial statements, current and proposed by-laws, and a proxy form for members who can’t attend the meeting. Printouts will not be provided at the AGM, please bring your own printouts or a device to display the PDF file (approximately 50 pages, 1.0 MBytes).

Election to the Board of Directors is open to members. Nominations are being accepted until 11:59pm on Wednesday 23 August 2023. Members can contact the Board for the nomination form.

This is a public meeting, everyone is invited to attend. Only members in good standing can vote on motions, or for the election of members to the Board of Directors.

On Saturday, 4 June 2022 CKMS-FM held its Volunteer Appreciation Picnic. It was a bit cool, jacket weather, so turnout was lower than expected. But those who came had good conversations, listened to good music, ate good pizza, and had a good time.
